WELCOME TO SAN DIEGO! We trust your flights and drives went well and that you’re excited to be in San Diego! We’re excited to have you here and we look forward to the best Surf ‘N Slam tournament ever! Below are some initial things you should be aware of to help you settle in and plan for today and tomorrow: 

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION BOOTH: If you have any questions or problems, the tournament information booth will be staffed daily to assist you. It is located in the hotel lobby. You will be able to exchange t-shirt sizes and purchase shirts and transportation passes. Game passes are only sold at the game sites. Lobby Booth Schedule: Dec. 26: 8am-8pm; Dec. 28, 29, 30: 8:30am-7:00pm; Dec. 27: 7:45-10am.

ORIENTATION: The Mission Valley Marriott is situated in an area with lots of things to do nearby.

SPORTS AUTHORITY, ROSS, OFFICE DEPOT, O’s AMERICAN KITCHEN, WENDY’S, DAPHNE’S GREEK CAFE, SOMBRERO MEXICAN, DRAGON CHEF, and JERSEY MIKE’S SUBS: These stores/restaurants are located across Qualcomm Way from the hotel. O’s American Kitchen (formerly Pat & Oscar’s) serves great barbecue chicken and ribs and large salads for good prices.

SAN DIEGO TROLLEY to SHOPPING and SIGHTSEEING: The famous San Diego Trolley stops right here at the hotel (Rio Vista Station) every 15 minutes (Westbound at :11, :26, :41, :56; Eastbound :04, :19, :34, :49). Go out the back doors of the hotel (between the elevators and the restaurant), turn right and walk to the back corner of the parking lot behind the pavilion and follow pathway to trolley. Starting December 27, tournament participants can utilize the trolley with their four day trolley pass. The first stop west (only two minutes away!) takes you to the Mission Valley Mall (shopping, restaurants, and 20 movie theaters), the second stop west takes you to Hazzard Center (grocery store, shops, food), the third stop is Fashion Valley Mall. You can also get to Old Town (fifth stop, 12 minutes) and to Downtown San Diego where you can find Horton Plaza, an upscale 4-level shopping mall. Horton Plaza is also in the charming “GasLamp Quarter” with nice shops and dining.

FASHION VALLEY MALL: This spectacular multi-story mall has Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and over 150 other stores and restaurants. You can ride the trolley located just behind the hotel (on Dec. 27-30 you can use your free trolley passes.) There is also a beautiful paved walkway along the river, nearly 2 miles each way.

MISSION VALLEY MALL: Shopping, restaurants, 20 movie theaters. A one mile walk along the paved river walkway behind the hotel or one trolley stop from the hotel.

HAZZARD CENTER: Grocery stores, bookstores, restaurants. About a 1.5 mile walk along the paved river walkway two trolley stops from the hotel.

FENTON PARKWAY: Fenton Parkway is one trolley stop EAST (toward Santee/Qualcomm Stadium) and has a McDonalds, Starbucks, IHOP, Cold Stone Creamery, IKEA, Costco, and other good restaurants. Costco has an outdoor food court you can access without needing a Costco card ($1.50 hotdogs, $10 huge pizzas, salads, etc.)

OTHER SIGHTSEEING OPTIONS: Visit Old Town (Mexican-style village with shops and restaurants), La Jolla (upscale shopping and restaurants like Hard Rock Café, La Jolla Caves), Coronado (famous Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Bridge, Coronado ferry to Downtown), and Mission Beach (Belmont Park roller coaster, roller-blading, beach boardwalk & shops).

OTHER INFORMATION:

KARAOKE! Monday, Dec. 28th from 8:00pm-10pm in Cabrillo. Come show off your vocal talent. Everyone is welcome.

HOTEL: In order to comply with fire codes, no rollaway beds will be allowed in two-bedded rooms. Only rooms with one king-size bed will be allowed a rollaway.

WRISTBANDS & TROLLEY TICKETS, ETC: Wristbands are in your coach’s packet. Wristbands allow entry onto tournament busses, into games and is your breakfast ticket. No admittance allowed without showing wristbands. Treat these like cash. The fee to replace them is $80 if they are lost.

DIRECTIONS to GAMES, ATTRACTIONS, RESTAURANTS, ETC: Directions available at the tournament lobby booth.

ROOM KEY WON’T WORK?? Don’t put your cell phone next to your room key . . . it can de-magnetize the key so that it won’t work to unlock your door!

CURFEW: To ensure a positive experience for all participants (and other hotel guests), there will be an 11:30pm curfew. Players should be in their rooms and quiet by 11:30pm (at the latest!). COACHES & CHAPERONES: it is impossible for the hotel security staff to enforce this curfew without your help. Please monitor your team’s rooms to make sure their tournament participation is not jeopardized! If rooms are noisy and guests complain, the head coach will be contacted. The Surf ‘N Slam staff and the other hotel guests thank you in advance for your cooperation!!

BREAKFAST: Each team receives 3 buffet breakfast meals per person listed on their team package. Team breakfast buffets are served in the ballroom from 6am-10am on December 28, 29 and 30. Your wristband is your breakfast coupon for each morning.  Those people who purchased a “Room Only” package may purchase the breakfast buffet for $12 per person from the Surf ‘N Slam lobby booth. Menu: assorted breakfast breads; fruit; dry cereal with milk; oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins; meat lovers breakfast scramble; breakfast potatoes; orange juice; water & coffee.

HOLIDAY BOWL: The Holiday Bowl (USC vs. Wisconsin) is Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7:30pm. If you buy tickets, you can use trolley passes to get to Qualcomm Stadium.

DISNEYLAND (December 27th) Busses depart the hotel at 8:00am and depart Disneyland at 8:00pm. You should be back to the Marriott by 9:45pm.
